Do you sometimes go to bed in the evening ready to conquer the world in your dreams, yet once you slip under the sheets you find yourself wide awake for some reason? Or maybe you wake up in the morning feeling tired and in need of “just a couple more hours” of sleep? If yes, you are not alone. Some of the reasons that get in the way of a good night's sleep may be due to stress, anxiety, or even exercising late in the evening. However, some little things might hurt our sleep quality and they are all hidden in our bedroom. Luckily, they are easy to fix, so let's move on to see what they are.
1. Excessive light
If you have a street light or other source of light outside the window and it is peeking inside your bedroom, chances are, it is not helping you fall asleep. Any kind of light at night somewhat confuses our inner clock and inhibits the production of the hormone melatonin in our bodies, the amount of which is strongly linked to how fast we will fall asleep.
So make sure your windows are properly covered with blinds or curtains, like linen nighttime curtains that are made of a heavier, thicker fabric.
2. Electronic devices
Speaking of unnecessary light sources, let’s get to our beloved sleep impairing obstacles - screens! We tend to have all sorts of screens in our bedroom, from TV or a computer to our all-time favorite - a smartphone. They are harmful for the same light-related reason, though the blue light coming from our devices has a stronger effect of keeping us awake.
The best thing to do is simply to keep your bedroom screen-free. However if for some reason that is not possible, try limiting your screen time in the evening and turn off all screens an hour before you go to bed as it will give time for your body to prepare for sleep.
When working from home, it is indeed tempting to answer a couple of emails or make a few calls sitting cozily in our beds. Whether related to our work or personal matters, getting tasks done lying in bed is not the best idea. And no, it has nothing to do with laziness. Working usually demands us to be alert, focused and it also provokes in us a spectrum of emotions, from cheerful excitement to stress and anxiety. So we might start to associate our bedroom with stress and high alertness, thus impairing our ability to properly relax and wind down in bed.

As Jordan Peterson simply put it - “clean your room”. As simple as it may sound, cleaning your bedroom is important for several reasons. First, getting rid of the dust as often as possible will ensure the air fresher. Secondly, by tidying-up the room you prevent the unnecessary items from distracting your attention. And last, but not least, decluttering our surroundings often lead to decluttered mind and a feeling of ease.
5. Low-quality bedding
How often do you feel frustrated at night because you feel too hot or too cold? The bedding you are sleeping in might be responsible here. We know that wearing high-quality natural fabric clothing makes our bodies feel more comfortable than those of lower quality fabric. So the same rule applies to the bedding. Make sure your bed is free of synthetic, unnatural fabrics. Instead, opt for natural linen bedding, that is highly breathable and moisture-wicking, providing comfort for both hot and cold sleepers all year round.
